Lecture: CARE OF THE SOUL IN MEDICINE
Healing Guidance for Patients, Families & People Who Care for Them
Friday, JANUARY 20, 2012 at 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Healing Guidance for Patients, Families & People Who Care for Them
Presenter: Thomas Moore, Ph.D.

Co-Sponsored by: Bayside Center for Behavioral Health at Sarasota Memorial Hospital

Soul has to do with our deep feelings, thoughts and attachments. Spirit has to do with meaning, vision and the wider context of our lives. Both are equally important and play an important role in sickness and healing. Home, family, memory, story and emotion are soul matters that intensify during sickness and need attention for healing. A larger sense of the meaning of illness and spiritual practice bring the spirit into play. Both of these sensibilities can be seen in images of the Blue Buddha and in the healing style of Jesus. This lecture prepares both patients and healthcare providers with a vision for healing people and not just bodies.

Workshop: CARE OF THE SOUL IN MEDICINE
Saturday, JANUARY 21, 2012 at 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Healing Guidance for Patients, Families & People Who Care for Them Presenter: Thomas Moore, Ph.D.

The Workshop will cover four areas:

  • Dealing in depth with patients
  • Caring for oneself, especially by restoring one's initial inspiration for the work
  • Working well with colleagues and creating a communal work environment
  • Attending to the physical place of healing, especially to the soul issues of family, home, art and dream

We'll consider symbolic aspects of the place of healing, as well. For patients and caregivers, the workshop will explore ways to deepen our appreciation for the place of illness in life and how best to participate in the healing. The workshop will be helpful both to health professionals and caregivers.
